New releases Avatar Legends and Marvel Tokon were among the five tournaments at Button Mash’s August edition, along with BM regulars Guilty Gear Strive and Street Fighter 6, and throwback game Street Fighter 3: Third Strike. Let’s check out how it went down:
Marvel Tokon#
Mini_Kai (Ghost Rider/Magik/Danger/Iron Man) fought his way back from losers’ bracket to take top honours. After losing to Jo (Loki/Blade/Magik/Green Goblin) in their winners’ semi-final matchup, he convincingly beat kaworuscott (Green Goblin/Blade/Iron Man/Spider-Man), then Jo again in a rematch, to set up a grand final with Maka (Black Panther/Green Goblin/Blade/Doctor Doom). He then beat Maka 3-1 to reset the bracket, then won 3-1 again to wrap up the tournament.
Street Fighter 6#
In a bracket full of Big Meaty Men (and women - no less than three Marisa players in top 8!) Slapping Meat (TM), CriticalLizard’s (Zangief) first BM appearance in a year saw him claim a relatively routine victory, dropping only two games in his run through the bracket, culminating in a 3-0 win over Neilo (Alex) in the grand final. Newcomer Winaguskiney (A.K.I.) put in a strong showing, making it all the way to the losers’ final before losing a close set 3-2 to Neilo - and it would not be his only podium finish of the day, as we’ll see later.
Guilty Gear Strive#
mattie (Potemkin) made it a three-peat as he retained his GGST title from April and July. He narrowly defeated Jo (Testament) in the winners’ final, who then faced a losers’ final against Lightheon (I-no). Lightheon was new to BM, but has put up some solid results in Dublin GGST tourneys recently, and pulled off a fine victory over Jo. He couldn’t topple mattie in the grand final, though, as the Potemkin player claimed a 3-1 win.
Avatar Legends#
Redslasher (Zuko) emerged on top in this hotly-contested bracket after defeating Cobelcog (Azula) 3-1 in the grand final, while Maka (Zaheer) took third place after making it to the losers’ final, where he was beaten 3-0 by Cobelcog.
Street Fighter 3: Third Strike#
For the fourth time in a row, kaworuscott (Yang) won the throwback tournament, securing victory with a dominant win over Winaguskiney (Urien/Chun-Li) in the grand final. Winaguskiney had fought his way through the losers’ bracket after a loss to kaworuscott in the early stages of the bracket, pulling off a thrilling comeback in the deciding round of his losers’ semi-final against Yreval (Makoto) and a convincing win over Scavenger XIII (Chun-Li/Remy) in the losers’ final, but could not get his revenge in the grand final.
What next?#
The date of the next Button Mash is still to be confirmed, but expect something in October or early November. The weekly locals at QUB Dragonslayers continue in the meantime, although they are moving back to Saturday afternoons for the time being.
